Why fit a presence detector

Lights left on in empty rooms cost the client money. A ceiling PIR presence detector switches lighting on when someone walks in and off again once the space is empty. They are a common fit in WCs, store rooms, corridors and small offices, and a simple way to add value on a refurbishment without changing the light fittings themselves. They are also popular in landlord areas of flats, where nobody takes responsibility for switching the lights off. Fewer switches on the wall also means fewer things for users to fiddle with.

Flush or surface mount

The Timeguard range comes in two versions. The SLFM360N is flush mount, suited to suspended ceilings and plasterboard where a neat finish matters. The SLW360N is surface mount, which is the easier choice on solid ceilings or where there is no void to work with. Check each listing for detection details and wiring before you plan positions in the room. Positioning matters. Keep detectors away from heat sources and air vents, and think about where people enter the room so the light comes on before they are in the dark. Getting the placement right first time saves call backs from clients who say the lights go off while they are still in the room.
